Reading Charlotte Mason's books for yourself is a great ambition.

Charlotte Mason’s six volume Home Education Series is a wonderful source of wisdom and knowledge about educating children, but it is easy to get overwhelmed. Personally, I had to start her first volume three times before I managed to finish it, and, eventually, the rest of the series!

What I have found, though, is that context helps. It helps to know who Charlotte Mason was, who she was writing to, and why she was writing it. A working knowledge of this context makes the volumes more approachable and your time reading them more fruitful.

In this webinar, I will draw together all of this context so that you can get the most of Charlotte Mason’s work. I’ll cover:

  • Charlotte Mason as a historical person; who she was and the world she lived in
  • The audience for each volume and how Charlotte Mason came to write it
  • A summary and outline of each volume
  • Insight into Charlotte Mason’s style of writing and how to get the most out of it
  • Direction for where to read Charlotte Mason’s volumes with other people.

I will draw from Charlotte Mason’s biography, scholarly research, Parents’ Review articles, and the volumes themselves to give helpful context to each volume that will guide your own reading. The webinar will take place on Zoom.

"That the mother may know what she is about, may come thoroughly furnished to her work, she should have something more than a hearsay acquaintance with the theory of education, and with those conditions of the child's nature upon which such theory rests."

About Amy:

Hi, I’m Amy! I’m a home educating mom of three boys, and an American living in the UK. I have an MA in Education which originally brought me to the UK. I worked for a number of years in higher education before leaving the workforce to take care of my children.

I first learned about Charlotte Mason when my eldest was just a baby. Since then, I have been reading, writing, and talking about her philosophy. I share the practical working-out of my Charlotte Mason journey at my blog, Around the Thicket.

You will also find me at the Thinking Love podcast, where I am a co-host, chatting about Charlotte Mason, the early years, and more.

This training is about one of the most important things I think we can do as home educators: getting ourselves grounded in the principles of an educational philosophy by reading and learning for ourselves.
